5 July 2011 | Tennis Victoria

I attended Tennis Victoria’s Future Leaders Program last year and after the camp finished I headed back to the Boronia Tennis Club, as part of the requirements of the program, to perform different volunteer roles.

After having a fabulous three days at the camp I was enthusiastic about volunteering at my local tennis club. I spent a few days considering what project I could undertake.  As it turns out, my volunteer hours were spent on a few separate projects:

  • Club shirts (approximately 20 hours)
  • Coaching clinics (approximately 20 hours)
  • Working bees (approximately 5 hours)
  • Helping the Junior Convenor (approximately 5 hours)

The main project that I decided to undertake was to obtain club t-shirts. Since my club didn’t have club t-shirts, and we had often talked about them, I decided I would apply for a grant to help fund them. Danielle Russom from Tennis Victoria pointed me towards a grant program run by the Victorian Government.

I researched the Sporting Uniforms Grant Program and the cost of club shirts including logo and sources for obtaining them, which had to be included in the application. I then approached the club for permission to apply and I prepared and sent in the application for the grant to the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs.

I had a sense of pride when the club was approved an allocation of funding to purchase club t-shirts for the juniors. The notice of approval for the grant came through on the 29/10/2010.  The grant was for $1000 dollars which was the highest possible grant and allowed the club to purchase t-shirts for all junior club representatives playing competition.

This was great for the club as all juniors were given a free t-shirt, allowing them to look more unified and properly attired.

The other projects that I performed at the club included helping out our club coach with coaching clinics over the holidays, attending working bees and helping out our Junior Convener, which improved my skills in a variety of different areas.

It was a great opportunity to give back to the club and get involved in activities that will help the club grow and prosper in the future.
