Junior Development Series State Championships
64 players and their families travelled to the Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre for Tennis Victoria’s 2011 Junior Development Series (JDS) State Championships on Sunday. All of the players were invited based on their performances in JDS tournaments throughout the second half of 2011.
The day started off with the 12/u events and, in the girls, it was Belle Thompson, the No.1 seed, who prevailed in a tight contest against the No.2 seed, Isabella Kitanov, 6-2. The boys’ event saw Jack Bianco, the No.3, seed go through the tournament untroubled as he cruised to victory in the final, 6-0 against Thomas Jordan.
The 10/u events began after lunch and saw all of the players play with the modified green ball (75% compression). Natasha Ilic won the girls’ event in a tight contest, 6-4 against Keona Mendis. The best tennis was saved to last as Johnny Barkoczy took out the boys 10/u title in an epic contest 7-6 (2) against Alex Bulte to finish off the day.

December Showdown
It was a top week for Victorian juniors at the December Showdown, with both the 18s and 14s events taking place.
In the 18s, Andrew Whittington made the final and put up a good fight against Luke Saville in three sets, before going down 6-7(5) 7-5 2-6.
In the 14s, Marc Polmans defeated Kyle Butters in three sets to win the title. The win was Polmans’s second national title, adding to the 12s title he won at the 2009 December Showdown.
There were plenty of other highlights for Victorians during the week, including 15 year-old qualifier Isabelle Wallace scoring a big upset win in the round-robin of the 18s event, coming back from 5-0 down in the third set to beat the fourth seed, Rachel Tredoux in the third-set tiebreak!
