7 February 2012 | Tennis Victoria

The most anticipated event for tennis players from regional Victoria will commence on Sunday 12 February, with an opening ceremony and spit roast dinner at the Swan Hill Lawn Tennis Club to signal the start of the 31st Country Week.

As the biggest grasscourt tournament in Australia, the Tankworld-Rebound Ace Sports Victorian Country Tennis Association (VCTA) Country Week will see 198 men’s and women’s teams and more than 1200 people compete in the round-robin format tournament.

“Country Week is the biggest grass court event in the nation, if not the world,” said Pat Gilchrist, VCTA Administrator.

“Swan Hill Lawn Tennis Club has prepared 100 exceptional permanent and temporary grass courts, and the town will be filled to capacity with tennis players enjoying their annual pilgrimage to Country Week.”

Each team will consist of a minimum of four men or four women (with a maximum of eight players per team) and will play in 24 grades ranging from A to C.

Matches will commence at 9 am (8.30 am Monday), 12.15 pm and 3.30 pm daily, while nightly entertainment will be shared across local venues. The finals will begin at 9 am on Friday 17 February.

It is expected that Country Week will inject over $2 million in financial benefits for the region.

Trevor Holt, President of Swan Hill Lawn Tennis Club, said both the club and the town were excited for Country Week and all it brings to the region.

“February is usually a reasonably quiet month for Swan Hill. The retail sector is very quiet and it brings in a lot of fresh faces,” said Holt.

“It’s wonderful for the tennis club and the whole community.”
