Cardio Tennis has put on a show in Melbourne’s City Square to help celebrate national Heart Week.

For two hours, celebrities such as Michael Hurley (Essendon footballer), Stephanie Hickey (snowboarder at 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics) and Alice McNamara (Australian rower) participated in the brand new tennis fitness program.

Hurley said the program was fantastic, and said it may even find a way into his training schedule.

“I think something like that (would be good) to change it up, and you get a bit of a sweat up,” Hurley said.

“I think the boys down at Essendon would love it… all you have to do is get the ball over the net, so I think most could do that without a sporting background, so it’s very open to anybody.”

Olympic rower and Empire State Building stair-climbing champion is no stranger to a good workout and said Cardio Tennis was a great way to work out for an hour without realising you’re exercising.

“It’s a really good general cardio workout, so it is enough to get your heart pumping and it’s high energy and it’s really fun, so time flies,” she said.

“Yeah I seriously will go back to the coaches and say, ‘next time we have a chance to do a session of our own, let’s do Cardio Tennis’.”

Cardio Tennis is a social, group tennis fitness program for people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities. Participants wear heart rate monitors, exercise to music, use low-compression balls and use a variety of equipment during the work out, including agility ladders.
