28 November 2012 | Tennis Victoria
In an historic afternoon for the first time in Victorian tennis history the very best men’s and women’s Victorian players came together at the Doveton Tennis Club in a fitting final round of the hugely successful ATL Victorian Conference.
The rolling carnival of ATL tennis has continued to gather momentum with each Super Round and it was great to see Doveton packed to the masses with spectators wanting a taste of the innovative world of ATL tennis.
In a day of highs, Tennis Victoria also announced the winners of the innovative fantasy style competition, the Star Performance Award, where each player’s results were tracked throughout the conference culminating in a male and female winner who were joined by the Star Performance Squad.
Liston Seagulls dynamo James Lemke won the men’s award and the Waverley Warriors Annabelle Andrinopoulos capped a memorable day in front of her home crowd winning the women’s Star Performer award.
At the completion of the Conference rounds Tennis Victoria is pleased to announce our finalists. In the men’s draw the No.1 ranked team in Tennis Australia’s preseason ratings the Liston Seagulls led by the man with the fastest serve in the world at 263km/h, Sam Groth, will face arch rivals the Kooyong Classics.
In the women’s draw the surprise packet of the competition the Frankston Firebirds will renew battles with the Kooyong Classics (ranked second best team in Australia with Tennis Australia’s ATL pre season ratings) after a close Super Round.
“It will be a special night under bright lights against our arch rivals Kooyong and a unique opportunity for the winning team to advance to the ATL Playoffs. We have our eyes firstly on this week’s final, but then on taking the big prize,” said Groth at the completion of Round 5.
The final leg of the ATL Carnival of tennis will roll on to the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club on Friday 30 November 2012 from 7pm. Both the men’s and women’s final will be played and the Victorian winners will advance to the ATL Playoffs to be played in the second week of the Australian Open against the winners of each other State Conference and representatives from Asia, Fiji and New Zealand.
