After a career best year in 2012, Victorian Marinko Matosevic (Dandenong North) will look to add another medal to his cabinet on Monday night when the Newcombe Medal winner is announced.

Matosevic has been nominated for the prestigious award recognising Australia’s most outstanding tennis player alongside Lleyton Hewitt, Casey Dellacqua and last years winner Sam Stosur.

The winner will be announced on Monday 3 December at a black tie event at the Crown Entertainment Complex in Melbourne.

“It’s an honour to be nominated for the Newcombe Medal after the greatest modern day Australian player,” said Matosevic.

“It will be a nice chance to get dressed up, I can’t wait for Monday night.”

Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said Marinko’s rapid ranking rise in 2012 was “a great story for Australian sport.”

“He’s got the award this year for the ATP’s most improved player, he’s got himself into the top 50 from being outside the top 100,” said Tiley.

“We’re obviously very proud of his accomplishments this year.”

The Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards will also take place on the night, where Victorian’s are nominated in all but two of the categories.

“We have a huge tennis community (in Victoria), lots of tennis courts and a great team competition with Pennant and now the ATL,” said Matosevic.

“Tennis in Victoria is on the way up, definitely!”
