The Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards were held last night, with Victorians taking out eight of the 15 awards on offer.
The night recognised the outstanding service to tennis at all levels – through clubs, coaches, players, volunteers, community and officials with Victoria excelling in all areas.
After receiving nominations in all but two of the categories, Victorian nominees claimed the following awards:
Most Outstanding Tournament – 2011 William Loud Bendigo International
Most Outstanding School – Maribyrnong Sports Academy
Most Outstanding Tennis Community – Elsternwick Park Tennis Club
Coaching Excellence (Club) – Wes Horskins
Most Outstanding 35+ Tennis Senior – Andrew Rae
Most Outstanding Athlete with a Disability – Glen Flindell
Volunteer Achievement Award – Anne Baldwin
Tennis Australia’s President’s Spirit of Tennis Award – Ian Barclay
The main award on the night was the Newcombe Medal, which was won by Samantha Stosur for the third consecutive year.
Stosur received the award for being Australia’s most outstanding elite player in 2012. The other finalists were Victorian Marinko Matosevic, Casey Dellacqua and Lleyton Hewitt.
