December and January make up the busiest period of the year for tennis players with the December Showdown, Australian Open and numerous tournaments around the state and country.

Across this busy period, Victorian’s had plenty of outstanding results from our juniors to our No.1 ranked male Marinko Matosevic through to our senior players.

Here are the highlights of the last two months:

ATP/WTA:

  • Marinko Matosevic (was highest ranked male in Australia for approximately two months and current world N.49) and Chris Guccione helped Australia win their Davis Cup tie against Taiwan.
  • Jarmila Gajdosova partnered with Matthew Ebden to win the 2013 Australian Open mixed doubles title. Gajdosova has also been chosen for the Fed Cup World Group tie against Czech Republic.
  • Olivia Rogowksa won the McDonalds Burnie International for the second year in a row.

December Showdown:

  • Both the 14/u Boys and 14/u Girls Victorian Teams won their 14/u National Teams Championships events – the first time this has been achieved by Victoria in the same year.
  • Azra Hadzic was a singles finalist of the Girls 18/u Australian Championships
  • Destanee Aiava was the winner of both the singles and doubles events in the Girls 14/u Australian Championships
  • Richard Yang was a singles finalist of the Boys 14/u Australian Championships
  • Zoe Hives was a singles finalist of the Girls 16/u Australian Championships
  • Greg Polmans and Connor Di Marco won the Boys Doubles 12/u Australian Championships

Asia-Pacific Tennis League:

  • The Liston Seagulls took out the inaugural ATL Playoffs held during the second week of the Australian Open. They defeated ATP Sydney in the final.
  • The Kooyong Classics women’s finished sixth, while the Classics men’s team finished fifth. Read more.

Victorian Juniors:

  • Omar Jasika made the third round of the Australian Open juniors. Read more about Jasika.
  • Destanee Aiava and Jamiee Fourlis were both selected for the TA Tarbes Tour to Europe (through January 2013) and Destanee has been shortlisted for the 2012 VicSport Victorian Junior Athlete of the Year award.
  • Gabi Ruffels traveled to America for the Orange Bowl, the most prestigious 14/u tournament in the world.
  • Our Victorian Super 10s teams competed in the National Finals, with our boys team winning while the girls team finished third.

Senior:

  • Simon Arms won the Men’s 50+ singles at Tennis Seniors Australian Individual Championships in Perth in early January
  • Wayne Cowley won the Men’s 60+ singles at Tennis Seniors Australian Individual Championships in Perth in early January
  • Nola Collins won the Women’s 75+ singles at Tennis Seniors Australian Individual Championships in Perth in early January.
