20 March 2013 | Tennis Victoria

The Tennis Victoria Premier League competition has passed the half way mark of the season and will go to a new level with the Country All Stars Men’s Super Round to be played at the Bendigo Tennis Centre on Sunday 24 March from 12pm.

The Super Round will mark the first time the Tennis Victoria Premier League has been held in country Victoria.

“This weekend’s Super Round is a historical moment for top level tennis in country Victoria,” said Tennis Victoria’s Competitions Manager Jeff Downes.

“The inclusion of the Country All Stars has been a resounding success so far. The team will help develop a future pathway for country players to top level competition while their Super Round on Sunday is a great way to showcase top level competition in country Victoria.“

In their inaugural year, Leon Retalick from the Bendigo Tennis Association has been instrumental in the formation of the All Stars team.

Downes said Retalick and captain of the team, Adam Fleming, should be “applauded for their passion for the team and promotion of tennis in country Victoria.”

The Country All Stars squad features players from across country Victoria including Mark Shanahan (Wodonga), Matthew Moloney (Warrnambool), Matthew Hicks (Geelong) and Luke Dixon (Shepparton). The All Stars will be looking to register their first win of the season in front of their home crowd on Sunday against Dingley. In the other matches, second placed MCC take on third placed Grace Park while Waverley will look to solidify fourth place against Royal South Yarra Lawn.

The women’s Super Round heads to Grace Park, where Grace Park will be looking to use their home advantage to topple the top-placed Kooyong Lawn. In the other matches, Frankston take on second-placed MCC while Delahey Recreation (currently in fourth) plays Grace Park (currently in fifth).
