Newcomers the Country All Stars claimed their first win of the Tennis Victoria Premier League season with a thrilling one game victory over Dingley in Sunday’s Super Round at Bendigo Tennis Association.

It was a historic weekend for tennis in country Victoria as Bendigo hosted the first ever Premier League round outside of Melbourne while the All Stars secured their first win of their maiden season.

“It was very exciting to cap off the day with a win and particularly Aiden Fitzgerald getting the break (of serve) in the second set (of his match)… he broke Matt Carroll at 5-4, had the match gone to a tiebreaker we would have lost,” said the All Stars Team Manager Leon Retallick.

“It couldn’t have got any more exciting… the boys played superbly to get the victory.”

With two rounds remaining of the season, Retallick said the All Stars team had already been a resounding success for tennis in country Victoria.

“I think the team will only get better from here.100 odd spectators came along and it (the Bendigo Super Round) was well received by both players and spectators,” said Retallick.

“We’re not measuring our season on how many wins we have … there are longer lasting impressions this team will make,” he added.

All the matches on the day finished with three rubbers each, with Grace Park defeating MCC by one set, while Waverley snuck home by two sets against Royal South Yarra Lawn.

On the women’s side, Kooyong Lawn defeated Grace Park six rubbers to zero, while Delahey won on sets against Frankston and MCC defeated Dendy Park five rubbers to one.

The final two rounds of the Tennis Victoria Premier League will be held on Friday 5 April and Sunday 7 April.* For a full schedule please visit the Premier League website.
