Kooyong Classics have stamped their names on the top spot of the Women’s ATL Vic conference with a stunning victory over the RSY Royals. With the inclusion of wildcard player Arina Rodionova and the depth of round 1 Star Performer Ellen Perez, Annabelle Andrinopoulos, Destanee Aiava and Kate Antosik the Classics were too strong for their cross town rivals winning 5 rubbers to 1.

Held at Frankston Tennis Club, the women’s round 2 draw was a resounding success with newly elected Mayor of Frankston City Council, Cr. Darrel Taylor and Local Member The Hon. Geoff Shaw in attendance to watch some spectacular tennis. Home side, the Frankston Firebirds made a stunning entry to court led in by a fire truck with its sirens blaring.

The excitement spilled on to court with a repeat of last year when the Firebirds met the MCC Stars. Each match went to 3 sets with 2 rubbers each  leading into doubles. Zoe Hives gained revenge on last year’s loss to the Firebirds’ Nives Baric with a 3-4 4-1 4-1 win this time around.

The Waverley Warriors made up for their slow start in round 1 with a confidence boosting win over the Delahey Reckers. Strong performances by Karen Filippou and Gabriela Sprague combined with their doubles wins gave the Warriors a 4-2 rubbers win.

In the Men’s competition, the MCC Stars sent a strong message to the competition dismissing round 1 winners, the Dingley Dingoes, 5 rubbers to 1.  The Kooyong Classics were bolstered by the inclusion of former New Zealand Davis Cup player Rubin Statham and up and coming youngster Marc Polmans.  They cemented their top spot on the ladder with a 6-0 win over RSY Royals.

The Tennis World Taipans registered their first win for the year with the Luke Saville and Richard Fromberg led team too strong for the Waverley Warriors taking out their match 4 rubbers to 2.

Round 3 of the ATL Vic Conference will be played at Doveton Tennis Club for the Men and MCC Tennis for the Women. The Men’s round will also coincide with the AO Blitz stop at Doveton Tennis Club from 10am.
