30 January 2014 | Tennis Victoria
The Australian Open 2014 has drawn to a close and with it, the current AO Blitz. Thanks to a great effort by many local towns, clubs, schools and individual players, Victorian towns were represented by over a third of the players in the male and female singles draw, 95 of the 256 AO 2014 players.
The men’s draw saw Mt Martha (Grigor Dimitrov) make it to the quarterfinals, only to be knocked out in a close four set match by eventual runner up Kendall, NSW (Rafael Nadal).
On the women’s side, Wahgunyah in Victoria’s North East was cheering hard for Canadian Eugenie Bouchard. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to help the teenage sensation get past the ultimate Australian Open 2014 Women’s Singles Champion, Watervale, SA (Li Na).
Watervale, South Australia along with Macclesfield/Echunga, South Australia (Australian Open 2014 Men’s Singles Champion, Stanislas Wawrinka) will celebrate their victories with a town party on World Tennis Day in March. The highest AO Blitz point scorers in each of the winning towns are also celebrating with a $10,000 ANZ Advantage Access account.
One member of the Wodonga community will also be celebrating with a $500 ANZ Visa Debit Card thanks to their allocated player, Nadiya Kichenok, hitting the fastest women’s serve at 202km/h.
Congratulations to Melton South Tennis Club who finished as the highest points scoring club in Victoria; 4th nationally. To award their amazing efforts the club received; 1×40 inch Hisense Plasma, a camera plate signed by a player at the Australian Open 2014, Corporate Hospitality and Hisense Arena tickets for two committee members including one night accommodation, an iPad 2 WiFi +3G 16GB, and one set of new signage for the club!
