2 October 2014 | Tennis Victoria
Yaapeet Tennis Club, who like to describe themselves as the ‘club in the scrub’, boast a membership higher than the town’s population.
A finalist in the Most Outstanding Club, Centre or Association at the Victorian Tennis Awards in June, Yaapeet is continuing to be recognised for their welcoming community environment. The club was a finalist in the Community Sporting Club of the Year- sponsored by La Trobe University at the Victorian Government’s 2014 Community Sport and Recreation Awards last night.
Newtown City Hockey Club claimed the award, but Yaapeet inspired the crowd and were rewarded with $1000.
The major award of the evening, the Minister’s Award, was presented to ‘The Huddle’, a joint North Melbourne Football Club, Scanlon Foundations and Australian Multicultural Foundation initiative.
Tennis Victoria, via the ACE program, has worked with ‘The Huddle’ promoting tennis, including running a six week tennis program at Flemington Community Center, and excursions to Royal Park Tennis Club and Melbourne Park. ‘The Huddle’ will also be included in Tennis Victoria’s annual multicultural day at the Australian Open.
Congratulations to all finalists and winners on the evening.
