The Tennis Victoria Premier League competition will go into finals mode this weekend. 2014 men’s Champions Grace Park Hawthorn and newcomers in the women’s competition Beaumaris Lawn have booked themselves a place in the final after finishing on top. Their opponents will be decided from the teams finishing second and third who will square off in a knockout semifinal on Friday night.
In the men’s competition, last year’s runner-up Kooyong Lawn will face cross town rivals Royal South Yarra Lawn, with both teams building some good momentum in last weekend’s final rounds. Kooyong Lawn emphatically defeated the improving Country All Stars in Round 4 to book a semifinal spot, while Royal South Yarra Lawn produced a huge upset in defeating competition favorites Grace Park Hawthorn, signaling to all clubs they should not be underestimated.
In the women’s semifinal, 2014 Champions Kooyong Lawn, will battle it out with newcomers Mornington in what is looming as an intriguing matchup. Kooyong Lawn have enjoyed a strong campaign and will have great belief in their ability to win while Mornington will need to overcome the demons of their Round 4 loss to Kooyong Lawn. They have defied the odds so far in their inaugural season so an upset is possible.
Looking ahead at the finals, Tennis Victoria’s Competitions Manager Jeff Downes said, “The finish to the home and away rounds was exciting with the Country All Stars emphasising their continued improvement by only missing out on a semifinals spot by just a point. Grace Park Hawthorn (men’s) and Beaumaris Lawn (women’s) have been the standout performers over the competition, but I sense the semifinals teams will be hopeful of upstaging the favorites. I am sure the final will be high quality tennis and will go right down to the wire. It is also very pleasing to see new clubs in Beaumaris Lawn and Mornington featuring in finals action.”
The Tennis Victoria Premier League Finals Day is one of the most prestigious days on the Tennis Victoria calendar. Play will commence from 12:00pm at Glen Iris Valley Recreation Club with the winners receiving $5000 and the runners up $2000 in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
