Initiated by Graham Watt MP, member for Burwood, a ANZ Tennis Hot Shots League initative, played in the FAST4 format was held at Parliament House on Sunday 31 January 2016 to coincide with the Australian Open Men’s Final.
A number of tennis clubs within the Electoral District of Burwood participated in the event, with 20 children enjoying playing on the pristine grounds at Parliament House. Parents also enjoyed the opportunity to be part of the eventful day.
The event was organised to showcase tennis and promote ANZ Tennis Hot Shots. It is also provided an opportunity for clubs within the Electoral District of Burwood to experience playing on the grass court at Parliament House.
“It’s a historic day for both children and adults, as the grass court will have to make way for a new Parliamentary building,” Graham Watt MP, who enjoyed having a hit with the children.
“Those who attended, can for future generations, attest to the fact that they were the last to play tennis on this very court”.
Natalie Bacon, Burwood Tennis Club Committee person, who coordinated the day commented; “What a great day and atmosphere, with Church bells even ringing for us in the heart of Melbourne. Back to the Grass for an Australian Open tennis event.”
At the end of the event, everyone enjoyed a BBQ in the Parliament House surrounds.
