Name: Andrew Reynolds
Title: Tournaments and Events Manager
What is your role here at Tennis Victoria?
I’m the Tournaments and Events Manager at Tennis Victoria so I oversee all Tournaments issues, officials issues, player issues, Pro Tour, JT and general tournaments. I have one direct report, Shelly Hart who works on tournaments and events as well.
I oversee Regional Team Events, which is nine events per year across regional Victoria, culminating in the Inter-regional Country Championships tournament in January with about 250-300 players participating across several days.
There are 90 Australian Ranking sanctioned tournaments, about 70 general tournaments and then the regional events plus the Junior Development Series events of which there are about 60. It’s a busy calendar.
How long have you been involved in tennis?
I started at Tennis Victoria at the end of 2012. Before that I was at Tennis Australia from 2007 – 2010.
Who is your favourite tennis player and why?
I like a lot of the up and coming players like Kimberly Birrell, Priscilla Hon andTammi Patterson, the players that we have a lot to do with, to see the success that they’re being rewarded with is great. As for the international scene I’d have to say Federer over Nadal any day.
What is something people wouldn’t know about you?
I lived in Doha, Qatar for several years and I can speak fluent Arabic.
Which is your favourite AFL team?
The Dees, the juga naught is just starting. It’s going to be a fantastic 10 years ahead.
Who are six people you would invite to a dinner party?
Morgan Freeman
Paul Roos, to breed the winners mentality
I love Princess Mary, which could be something people might not know about me
Just for the laugh factor, Ken Jacobs (Tennis Vic Exec Manager, Places to Play and Government Relations).
Anyone of my friends here at work, anyone but Jeff (Downes, Competitions Manager)
Would you like to invite your wife?
Yes of course, she would be one of the six for sure!
Favourite tennis experience?
I would say the Newcombe Medal nights are pretty great, second to the Victorian Tennis Awards of course. When at Tennis Australia, working on the Australian Open was amazing. It’s crazy hours but also a very rewarding experience. From a participation perspective, watching some 9 and 10 year olds become very good tennis players has been great. Marc Polmans for example, I’ve known him since he was a young boy, now he’s a Junior Australian Open doubles title winner so that’s always great to see and feel like you contribute in some way to their pathway to success, so that’s pretty special.
Who would play you in a movie?
Clearly Richard Gere or George Clooney.
What’s the next big thing for the Tournaments and Events Team?
I’m in the middle of the Victorian Junior State Clay court Championships which is across five venues. After that we have a quiet period. We will start to work on the calendar for 2017.
