Central Gippsland have claimed the first edition of the newly renamed Judy Dalton Cup, defeating Loddon Campaspe at the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday.

The Regional Team Event was originally known as the Evonne Goolagong Cup before being renamed to the Foundation Cup for 15 years.

However 2016 sees the 13/u event renamed once again to honour Victorian tennis legend Judy Dalton, with the nine-time Grand Slam doubles champion attending the tournament in Yarrawonga.

β€œI feel very honoured to have this cup named after me,” said Ms Dalton. β€œIt was a joy to attend the first competition as the girls were so competitive, the standard is high with a very friendly atmosphere. I wish them all good luck for their future careers.”

Finishing second on the ladder after six ties, Central Gippsland rallied to defeat Loddon 4-30 to 2-21 in a tough match-up. Central Highlands 4-30 def Northern Mallee 2-23 in the playoff for third.

The final Regional Team Event for 2016 will see 12/u boys and girls compete in the Alicia Molik Cup at the Dingley Tennis Club on the 10th and 11th of December.
