Victorians have had their most successful December Showdown in recent years, with three young-guns securing Australian Open 2017 Wildcards and six juniors earning Australian Championship titles.
Nineteen-year-old Omar Jasika (Vic) was awarded a wildcard into the men’s singles main draw of Australian Open 2017 today following his win over John-Patrick Smith in the Australian Open Playoff final.
Seventeen-year-old Jaimee Fourlis (Vic) defeated Abbie Myers (NSW) 7-6(6) 7-5, to win her spot in the women’s singles main draw in January.
On Friday, Destanee Aiava (Vic) and Alicia Smith (Qld) earned a doubles wildcard for Australian Open 2017. Aiava also secured a main draw singles wildcard with victory over Fourlis in the 18/u girls’ Australian Championships the week prior.
Sixteen-year-old Aiava is set to become the first player born this century to play at a Grand Slam when she returns to Melbourne Park in January.
Other Australian Championship title winners over the December Showdown included Omar Jasika’s younger brother Amor Jasika. Amor defeated Lennon Jones (JPN) 4-6 6-3 7-5 in the boys 12/u singles championships.
In the boys 16/u singles, Matthew Dellavedova claimed the Australian title defeating Alexander Crnokrak (QLD) 6-3 7-6 (4).
Joshua Charlton and Jeremy Taylor took out the Boys 18/u Doubles while Jaimee Fourlis and Jeanette Lin –secured the Girls 18/u Doubles title.
In the 16/u boys doubles final, Victorian Ken Cavrak and South Australian Sean Van Rensburg were defeated by Alexander Crnokrak (QLD) / Anthony Popyrin (NSW) 7-6 (2) 6-4.
