20 February 2017 | Tennis Victoria
The greatest community sporting event has come to a close with the culmination of the VCTA Country Week 2017 event in Yarrawonga on Friday.
200 teams comprising over 1500 players competed in the event across 24 grades using over 100 permanent and temporary grass courts at Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club and Victoria Park. The stories of the week of tennis, fun, friendships and competition will be remembered for years to come.
The Lecontes and Tandara took out the A Grade sections in a repeat of last years results. Tandara this year were too strong for the Maryborough Missiles while The Lecontes again defeated Mud Island in a rematch of last year’s final.
The Ballarat Bilbys, with an team average age of 78, and in their 20th year of attending Country Week, took out their first title winning the Women’s C5 section.
The Men’s Special B2 section was decided by a tiebreaker after the scores between Napoleons Battlers and West Wylong Blandicoots couldn’t be split after playing the four rubbers. Napoleons Battlers clinched the victory in the end.
And in the women’s sections, there were some very close finals with the Shepparton Sapphires defeating the Rushy Gippers by 1 game in Women’s Special C3. This was also the case in the C4 section when Metcalfe Blue defeated the Sunbury Sippers by one game.
This was the final Country Week event under the VCTA banner. From 2018, Tennis Victoria will manage the event which will next be held at the Swan Hill Lawn Tennis Club from 12 – 16 February 2018. This brings to a close the 27 year tenure of Patricia Gilchrist and Carol Pearce as the leaders of this wonderful event. In closing the tournament Pat said “that after 27 years of doing what they love, it’s fabulous that two icons of tennis are going out on a high.”
