Charlton Tennis Club’s Brian and Rae Heenan have been awarded the first Tennis Victoria Tennis Service Award for 2017.
The award aims to recognise those who have demonstrated their contribution to the sport of tennis through devoted and significant service to any one or more of the State Tennis Associations’ affiliated tennis clubs and/or associations and/or member organisations.
Both Mr and Mrs Heenan have been involved in various roles at the Charlton Lawn Tennis Club for 50+ years. Their involvement at the club initially began in a playing capacity, with Rae’s on court achievements include 15 Club Championships in the Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
During Brian’s 50+ years of being involved in the club some of his significant contributions include;
- President for 5 years
- Secretary for 5 years
- Greens Keeper for over several decades starting in 1964 when the pay rate was $1per hour
- Committee Member for 49 years
- Life Membership 1990
- Tournament official for 46 years including Tournament Referee
Brian also wrote and published “The First 125 Years 1881- 2006″ the history of the Charlton Lawn Tennis Club.
As well as Rae’s on court achievements, her volunteer contributions include:
- 36 years as Tournament Secretary
- Ladies Coordinator for over a decade
- Coach and coordinator of juniors for over 15 years
- Committee Member for 15 of years
- Life Member 1990
- Charlton Sportsperson of the Year in 1971
