Determined to keep their club facilities in working order, Clifton Creek Tennis Club is on a mission to encourage local level tennis.

On Sunday, 21 May, the club hosted an ‘Open Courts’ social event in an effort to entice new players and former members. Club officials examined 40 years of files in order to track down these former members, a task undertaken by the three remaining committee members.

The weather gods were smiling on the club as around 25 players graced Clifton Creek. Participating in Fast4 and ANZ Tennis Hot Shots, the local community were enjoying their time on court.

Tennis Victoria Senior Participation Leader, Tanya Mason, was on hand to lend some assistance as players were also treated to Cardio Tennis and the speed gun for their serves.

“It really reinforces the importance of country tennis clubs when I get to see a little community club getting together sharing stories and enjoying the social aspects of their club,” Mason said.

“It’s fantastic to see the community spirit alive and well in a club despite having court issues and no teams playing local competition.”

Following lunch, a presentation was conducted by new President, Judy Ireland. Outlining the club’s list of previous achievements, Ireland also paid tribute to the small community – including the seven life members who were formally recognised.

A story of determined community with a love for tennis would surely resonate with many clubs around Victoria. The Clifton Creek Tennis Club is testament that hard work and community engagement can create something very special.
