Dylan Alcott and Heath Davidson have advanced to the Quad Doubles final to be played tonight, while Alcott will also play for singles gold on Thursday.
Dylan Alcott will play for a consecutive Paralympic Quad Singles gold medal after holding off Dutch teenager Niels Vink in a semi-final epic. In a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 battle for the ages, the Victorian eventually prevailed to advance to the singles final.
The Dutch young gun didn’t make it easy, playing well beyond his years and challenging the 30-year-old from the very first game. The two and a half hour match saw Vink take an early lead of 2-0 in both first and second sets, but in the end, the top seed proved too good.
Alcott now faces another Dutchman, world No.2 Sam Schroder, in the Quad Singles gold medal match on Thursday.
Fellow Victorian and close friend Health Davidson will be cheering on from the sidelines after bowing out of the singles competition in the quarterfinals, falling short to Alcott’s opponent Schroder.
He will however still play for doubles gold, teaming up with Alcott to advance to the Quad Doubles final. After defeating Japanese pair Mitsuteru Moroishi and Sogi Sugeno 6-2, 6-4 in the semi-final, the Victorian duo faced Schroder and Vink in the Quad Doubles gold medal match later on Wednesday night.
It was a valiant effort from the Aussie veterans, but it was the Dutch pair that came away with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
While the pair fell just short of back-to-back gold medals in doubles, Alcott claimed gold in singles at Rio 2016, and will look to do the same in Tokyo when he clashes with the Netherlands’ Sam Schroder on Saturday morning.
