Interning at Tennis Victoria – JOEL GALLAGHER

Joel Gallagher joined Tennis Victoria as an intern from Federation University in Ballarat. Joel is studying a Bachelor of Sport Management and will graduate this month. Joel recently secured the role of Hospitality Services Assistant at the Australian Grand Prix Corporation ahead of the Australian Grand Prix in April.

We have loved having Joel on board the Tennis Vic team – we caught up with Joel to hear about his experiences in Tennis and at Tennis Victoria!

What has been the best part of working at Tennis Victoria

The best part of working at Tennis Victoria is the friendly environment in which everybody has been so welcoming and eager to assist in ensuring my time at Tennis Victoria is as positive and as beneficial for myself as can be. Meeting with staff via Microsoft Teams and in person at a handful of events have enabled me to see just how friendly and welcoming all the staff are which has made my time at Tennis Victoria much more positive, and I enjoy working each day for that reason.

What has been the best task/project you were given working at Tennis Victoria?

From the start of my internship, I had been given the task of developing a guide to League Manager in which would assist Organisations in using the system. This guide involved me documenting each step of creating a league on the system and using screenshots to support the guide. It has been a beneficial task as it enabled me to create a guide whilst learning the ins and outs of the system for myself. During the process I worked alongside Tennis Australia staff as it was a project they had been working on. Tennis Australia are in the process of uploading the guides onto the online support site for anybody to access when required.

The project assisted me in understanding how to operate the system as I would come to use it each day of my internship. It also led to me communicating to and assisting clubs and associations using League Manager and even converting some to use the system for their internally run leagues.

What are three things you’ve learnt whilst being here?

I have learnt how to use a range of systems used by Tennis Victoria including League Manager and ClubSpark which have enabled me to assist clubs and associations in using the systems.

I have learnt a lot regarding the formats of tennis as I had no previous playing experience in the sport. Using League Manager to input results and assisting at Tennis Victoria’s Premier League rounds has helped to improve my knowledge of the different formats of the game.

Working in a large sporting organisation has been beneficial in seeing what is required for sport to be run in the state. The range of departments, the processes in which each department is responsible for and the roles that each staff member plays. This all contributes to enabling tennis leagues to operate and for players to participate and compete.

Explain your best day at Tennis Victoria?

My best day at Tennis Victoria would no doubt have been the Premier League Grand Final held at the National Tennis Centre. It was great to experience such a premier competition of tennis with some great Victorian players facing off. For one, it was good to get some hands-on experience with events as most events have been cancelled throughout the year. And secondly, it was good to work alongside Tennis Victoria staff as I have mainly communicated with others via online platforms and not met majority of the staff in person.

What do you think of the staff culture? And have you enjoyed interacting with the tennis community?

I think the staff are what make Tennis Victoria such a great working environment. The respect and professionalism of all staff within the organisation creates a productive environment in which we can all thrive in.

I have greatly enjoyed interacting with all staff at every opportunity and also communicating with the tennis community via emails, Online or at events.

Thank you for your contribution Joel, from all of us at Tennis Victoria, and all the best for the Grand Prix!
