Congratulations to Hugh Bergen of the Wagunyah Tennis Club who is the Community Champion of the Month for May 2023!
Hugh was the mastermind behind the first ever Racquets Against Breast Cancer Tournament held in Wagunyah. The event was hailed a great success raising over $3000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Close to 100 people, including 50 participants came together for a day of fun filled tennis action that in addition to the competitive matches included stalls and activities, a raffle, sausage sizzle and bake sale with all proceeds going to the charity.
Hugh came up with the idea as he wanted to raise funds for breast cancer, a disease that runs in his family.
The tournament received overwhelming support from the community, with many businesses and individuals sponsoring the event.
It was such a success that the Racquet Against Breast Cancer Tournament is now scheduled as an annual event, with Hugh and other organisers hoping to raise even more funds in the years to come.
