State Grade Results: Semi Finals

The semi finals lived up the hype, with three hard-fought tussles confirming our Grand Finalists for 2023.

Match Details:

The lone Women’s match saw Harkaway avenge its Grade 1 semi-final loss to Grace Park Hawthorn last year, turning the tables in a stunning 5-1 victory. The day started positively for Harkaway, winning both doubles rubbers in close contests. Kate Smith and Christina Dodaj won their singles in straight sets, and whilst Sacha Rankin won her singles for Grace Park, Kirra Bond Scott’s 10-7 match tiebreak win against Nicole Mullen confirmed the result for Harkaway.

In the other match at Grace Park, the home side were comfortable 4-1 winners against MCC Glen Iris Valley to book their spot in the Grand Final. An all star line up consisting of Jackson Varney, Frank Moser, Daniel Ferretti and Adam Hubble had too much firepower in the doubles, before a match tiebreak win for Ferretti against Nicholas Jovanovski, and a straight sets triumph for Varney against Michael Turlejski brought the result home for Grace Park.

The other Men’s semi final took place at Royal Park, and was a colossal battle with Fawkner edging Kooyong 4-2, despite trailing on games. Both doubles went to match tiebreaks, and Fawkner showed their class to win both. However, the tie flipped on its head when Jacob Grills handed Chanchai Sookton-eng his first loss of the campaign, with a thrilling 6-7 7-6 10-5 result. Ken Cavrak steadied the ship with a straight sets win, and whilst Cooper Errey won comfortably against Stephen Hoh, James Elia got the result in a match tiebreak against Tom Patton to seal victory for Fawkner
