28 November 2024 | Tennis Victoria
On Thursday 21 and Friday 22 November, the Tennis Victoria Schools Team attended the ACHPER Victoria Conference at Monash University, Clayton, to deliver engaging workshops aimed at enhancing physical activity in schools.
The annual conference, hosted by the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER), is a premier professional development event for educators passionate about promoting health and physical education. With over 2,000 members across Victoria, ACHPER is a leader in delivering high-quality programs to government, Catholic, and independent schools, working towards a vision of active and healthy communities.
The Tennis Victoria Schools Team brought their expertise to the two-day event, facilitating workshops designed to empower teachers with practical tools to inspire their students through tennis.
Day 1: Secondary Schools – Physical, Fun and Fitness
On the Thursday, the team presented the workshop Physical, Fun and Fitness: Reinvigorate your students’ passion for movement for secondary school educators. Using activities from the innovative Tennis Toolbox, the session focused on the benefits of Cardio Tennis and showcased engaging exercises aimed at getting students moving, smiling, and having fun.
Day 2: Primary Schools – Modify for Success
Friday’s session, Modify for Success: From Rolling to Serving and Rallying, targeted primary school educators and emphasized building sequential movement skills through fun and inclusive activities. Teachers explored creative ways to engage students using equipment like cones, butterfly nets, and hoops, learning how to progress their students’ skills from beginner levels to more advanced stages of play.
Kerryn Harrison, Tennis Victoria’s new Tennis in Schools Administrator, reflected on the workshops and the value of sharing tennis with educators.
“Participating in the ACHPER conference was a fantastic opportunity to connect with passionate educators and showcase how tennis can bring energy and excitement into the classroom and the schoolyard. It’s great to see teachers embrace creative ways to help students enjoy movement and develop their skills,” said Kerryn.
The Tennis Victoria Schools Team continues to work collaboratively with educators, equipping them with tools to make tennis a fun and accessible way for students to stay active, build confidence, and develop lifelong skills.
