Over the weekend we had the opportunity to recognise the outstanding contributions of numerous dedicated members of Overport Park Tennis Club by awarding them with Tennis Service Awards. These awards celebrate individuals whose efforts have shaped the club’s success and enriched its community.
Lynda Weatherley: A Club Legend
Lynda Weatherley, a committed member of the Overport Park Tennis Club for over 20 years, has been a beacon of leadership and commitment. From coordinating events to fostering community engagement, Lynda’s passion for tennis is evident in every facet of the club’s operations. Alongside her husband, Bruce, Lynda oversaw significant upgrades, including new lighting, court resurfacing, and improved viewing areas and fencing. Her dedication embodies the spirit and values of the club, ensuring a welcoming and vibrant environment for all.

Bruce Weatherley: The Heart of the Club
As Club President, Bruce Weatherley’s hands-on leadership sets him apart. From managing facility upgrades to stepping in as a cleaner when needed, no task is too small for Bruce. His ability to make every member feel valued and his presence at events and on the barbecue have cemented his reputation as the heart of Overport Park Tennis Club. Alongside his wife, Lynda, Bruce oversaw significant upgrades, including new lighting, court resurfacing, and improved viewing areas and fencing.

Mark Muir: Championing Participation and Growth
Mark Muir’s impact on the club extends far and wide. As the Grants & Sponsorship Officer since 2015, Mark has secured vital funding and sponsorships. He pioneered the Wednesday Ladies Walk-Up Tennis program, funded by the Victorian Government’s This Girl Can initiative, promoting female participation. Mark’s contributions to facility maintenance and unwavering support at Working Bees showcase his commitment to the club’s growth.

Kathy Ellison: A Lifetime of Dedication
Kathy Ellison’s legacy spans decades of service. Since joining the general committee in 1994, she has been pivotal in coordinating junior and mid-week ladies competitions. Kathy’s organisational skills and volunteer spirit have ensured the smooth running of countless events, including Tuesday Night Tennis and Open Days. Her involvement in the clubhouse refurbishment project exemplifies her forward-thinking approach to the club’s future.

Roger Smith: A Pillar of Stability
Roger Smith’s contributions have spanned over four decades, encompassing roles such as Junior Coordinator, President, and Senior / Open Competition Coordinator for a record-breaking 47 seasons. Roger’s efforts in maintaining the en tout cas courts and organising social hits have fostered a strong sense of community. From sausage sizzles to facility upgrades, Roger’s dedication has left an indelible mark on the club.
