Romsey Tennis Club Wins Big Through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme

Romsey Tennis Club has served up a major win – not just on the court, but through their commitment to sustainability and fundraising. As the top-performing club in the recent Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme x Tennis Victoria competition, Romsey was rewarded with an unforgettable experience: attending the Australian Open Men’s Singles Final and receiving an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour.

The club has been a dedicated participant in Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, raising over $1,800 to support much-needed court upgrades.

“Winning the prize was an incredible moment for our club,” said Deborah Rees, Treasurer Romsey Tennis Club. “We’re only a small club, but this competition showed that success isn’t about size – it’s about having dedicated members who are willing to do the work. All of our members are proud of what we’ve achieved, and the prize was well deserved.”

Club representatives Jack, Brett, Deborah, and Mitchell attended the Men’s Singles Final, with the behind-the-scenes tour proving to be a highlight.

“Thank you to Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme and Tennis Victoria for this incredible experience – we had an amazing day,” Deborah said. “It’s fantastic to see a corporate organisation partnering with Tennis Victoria to create meaningful opportunities like this.”

Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme at the Australian Open

This year’s Australian Open showcased the power of the partnership, proving just how impactful recycling initiatives can be on a large scale.

By the Numbers

  • 740,000+ cans and PET bottles were collected and recycled through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, with rebates supporting the Australian Tennis Foundation.
  • More than 2,000 bins of glass were hand-separated, crushed, and recycled.
  • 53+ tonnes of cardboard were sorted, flattened, and recycled.
  • 12 additional tonnes of non-CDS mixed recycling were accepted and processed.
  • 29 “Trash Talkers” helped AO fans dispose of waste correctly at five onsite recycling hubs and supported six waste management compounds.

With these incredible results, Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme partnership continues to drive real environmental and financial benefits for the tennis community.

Fundraising Success & Club Impact

Romsey Tennis Club has been involved in the Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme since its launch, using the funds raised to support the replacement of three aging courts. With more work to be done, the club is now fundraising to replace its final two courts.

“Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme has provided a valuable, easy way to generate income for our club without having to ask for direct donations,” Deborah added. “Beyond fundraising, it’s also helped us build stronger ties with the local community, including partnerships with local businesses.”
