1 February 2011 | Tennis West

Session 3 of the Hyundai Hopman Cup (HHC) saw Italy defeat Great Britain in a match that came down to a live mixed doubles between Andy Murray/Laura Robson & Francesca Schiavione/Potito Starace. Over 7,000 people packed the stadium to watch this nail biting session, sponsored by Tennis West and known as the Tennis West Family Day.

The MLC Tennis Hot Shots on-court demonstration took place between the Men’s Singles Match and the Mixed Doubles match, and was one of the highlights of the day. Sixteen 5-8 year olds from various clubs across the metro area strutted on to centre court to showcase their skills using modified equipment and courts. The display lasted for 20 minutes, during which time the future tennis stars were asked to rally on the mini tennis courts. Some participants were even lucky enough to be interviewed by the Hopman Cup MC and meet Alicia Molik! Not only were the kids very ‘cute’, many onlookers were stunned at how well they could hit the ball!

Tennis West had a number of tennis activities set up throughout the week, including an interactive tennis zone featuring mini tennis courts, totem tennis and a guess the balls competition. The activities were very popular with the crowd, with people of all ages lining up to get involved!

Congratulations to Tanya Forth, R. Willis and Liz Richter who were the lucky winners of the ‘Guess the Ball’ Competition . All three winners will take home a fantastic Australian Open tennis pack.
