The Brikmakers State League Blockbuster marked the commencement of the Brikmakers State League season with all teams playing their first round matches at the State Tennis Centre on Saturday 29 January.
Clubs involved included City Beach, Cottesloe, South Perth, Blue Gum, UWA, Sorrento Hensman Park, Wembley Downs and Dalkeith.
All came with a fighting spirit but the weather unfortunately was not so obliging. Play was initially postponed for 50 minutes due to temperatures on court rising above 37 degrees.
The scorching heat eventually reduced and play commenced. This was short-lived however, when an unexpected downpour occurred 15 minutes in, ceasing play once more.
Looking at the drenched courts and the uncertain clouds lurking in the distance it was finally decided by Tournament Referee Jill Sheridan to abandon the matches. Points will now be split equally between teams, with round 2 matches to be played at respective clubs on Saturday 5 February.
Despite the weather it was great to see all players out to support their clubs in what would have otherwise been a great start to the tournament season. This year is set to be a start studded competition with the likes of Matt Ebden and Jessica Moore set to grace the Brikmakers State League courts.
