The 2011 Cliffs Esperance Tennis International Main Draw kicked off this morning, with fourteen singles matches and sixteen doubles matches featured at the Esperance Tennis Club.
Matt Reid, the number 2 seed from Sydney opened the tournament with a tantalising straight sets win over Queensland’s Calum Puttergill (6-2)(6-1). Reid took charge early in the first set and delivered a fault free straight sets victory as he quickly settled into his stroke deep in the court.
Local hope Storm Sanders just missed out on an epic upset win this morning after qualifying for the Main Draw yesterday. The seventeen year old played out of her comfort zone early and took the first set (6-2). Her British opponent, Lisa Whybourn managed to stay in the match by the skin of her teeth and settle the level at one set all, winning the second (7-6)(8). Whybourn then took control and closed the match out 6-4 in the third.
Jan Budden, Tournament Director had this to say about the event “The standard of play in the tournament has been exceptional so far. Considering we only kicked the main draw off today, the 1st round matches and qualifying rounds has been fierce competition. This is credit to the calibre of players we have wanting to play this tournament”
The courts were filled and the players a plenty as the top tiered tennis action took to the courts. With the Tie-Breaker shootout due to commence tomorrow evening, the courts are sure to be entertaining morning, noon and night!

We’re lucky to have a number of International, National and State players competing for their share of the Australian Pro Tour $1.2million prizepool, as well as vital Australia Ranking points contributing to their world ranking.
