Over 220 tennis enthusiasts flocked to the South of Perth Yacht Club to celebrate a brilliant year of tennis with a roaring 20’s themed event.
The theme set the mood for the event – as guests arrived dazzled in pearls, top hats and boas as they strutted down the red carpet. Guests were treated to music by Vive Oldham and Harvey Rae as they enjoyed pre-dinner drinks outside on the Swan River shore.
Channel 7’s Natalia Cooper entertained guests as the MC for the evening.
The Awards got underway with the Sport Surfaces Junior Tennis Star award presented by John Cramer. An absent Storm Sanders was awarded the trophy for her incredible season, capitalised with her first Junior ITF Title.
Caitlin Cridland was awarded the Caren Bucens Award for her commitment and attitude both on and off the court.
The audience then broke out in laughter as the 12 ‘best dressed’ couples strutted and pouted down the catwalk. Simon Wardman and Vilma Rovedatti were crowned Belle and Beau of the evening with an honourable mention to Competitions Manager Shane Smedley who was sporting an iconic tuff of hair on his ‘slick’ head.
Mr Sam Buckeridge, BGC Australia Director presented the Brikmakers MVP Awards for each division along with the Brikmakers State League shields.

Medhat Takla from Chambers Investment Planners was pleased to present Richard Sampson and Katy O’Shea the State League Player of the Year Award. Richard had a stellar season dropping just 4 out of 21 matches for Sorrento in the home and away season. With Katy going through the entire home and away season undefeated for City Beach Tennis Club. Linneys continued their valuable sponsorship of the Women’s State League Player of the Year Award, rewarding Katy with an 18ct yellow gold pearl pendant worth over $1,000.
Frank Agostino then presented the Westec Volunteer of the Year Award. This year we had two stand out finalists submit for the award, which resulted in a dual winner recognised for their contribution to their respective clubs. Richard Price from Manning Tennis Club and Trisha Howe from Bunbury Tennis Club for their dedication over many years.
Up next were the Chambers Coaching Excellence Awards. To align the WA Industry Awards with the National Newcombe Awards, the coaching award was divided into 3 categories.
The Chambers Coaching Excellence – High Performance went to John Thorpe from Dalkeith Tennis Club.
Chambers Coaching Excellence – Club was awarded to David Kerr from Merrifield Park Tennis Club and the Albany Tennis Academy.
With the final coaching award, the Chambers Coaching Excellence – MLC Tennis Hot Shots award going to Matt Bull from Onslow Park Tennis Club.
Matt Hayes from TOAWA then presented the all important Officials Awards. Winners are as follows:
Alf Chave Trophy – For most promising novice umpire – Joel Moss
Dawn & Sandy Hay Tray – Commitment to Division –Rob Noseda
Norm Cunningham Shield – For Excellence in the Chair) –Josh Carter
Official of the Year –Des Michael
The final award for the evening was the Sportrophy Club of the Year. Ian Passmore from Sportrophy was delighted present the winning award to the Alexander Park Tennis Club, accepted on behalf of the club was club President Mr Greg Hutchinson.

Following the auction the lucky winners of the raffle were announce. Congratulations to South Perth’s Olivia Raison taking out the first prize – a stunning white gold pearl pendant from Linneys valued at over $1,200. 2nd prize went to our Volunteer of the Year, Mrs Trisha Howe who won 2 box tickets to the 2013 Hyundai Hopman Cup. The final prize in an Australian Open prize pack was won by National Academy Coach – Perth Mr Adam Carey.
Acting President, Michael Lee then closed all official proceedings of the evening with DJ Dyson Peppin playing some classic tunes until midnight.
