Former world number 274 Michael Venus (NZL) will travel to Perth next week to compete at the SGS WA Open Platinum AMT from 23-27 September at the State Tennis Centre, Burswood.

Venus will join a host of WA talent all vying for the title and $10,000 prize pool, including number 3 seed Zach Itzstein who recently won the Winter AMT on home soil at the State Tennis Centre. WA locals Vuk Velickovic, Kayne Ryan and Jack Lyttle are also among those named in the Main Draw.

WA will also have its share of talent in the qualifying draw, with Spring AMT Champion Dominic Bechard, Tyler Tranquille and Scott Webster just 3 of the 34 qualifiers looking to advance to the main draw.

Venus represented the US in international university events and was once listed as an American on the ATP website but says there are no doubts to where his allegiances lie.

“I’m much more of a Kiwi than an American and there is a lot more opportunity for me there.”

Venus attended high school in Florida, then went to the University of Texas and Louisiana State. Matches there would regularly draw crowds of 300-400 and Venus made several All-American selections. However he switched nationality in June 2010 and began playing in the New Zealand Davis Cup Team.
