Former World Number eight Alicia Molik is Australia’s new Fed Cup Captain.

The two-time Grand Slam doubles champion (Australian Open 2005 and French Open 2007) and Athens Olympic bronze medallist will replace the successful Dave Taylor at the helm of the national team.

Taylor has chosen to focus solely on his coaching role with Sam Stosur, ending a seven year reign having lifted the Australians into World Group 1 – the top eight teams.

Tennis Australia Head of Professional Tennis Todd Woodbridge announced the appointment today and said Molik was perfect for the job.

“Alicia has a wealth of experience at the top level and in Fed Cup and will be a great leader for this team,” said Woodbridge who will act in a mentoring capacity for the new captain.

“Alicia’s strong and recent involvement with the tour and Fed Cup give her a great perspective for the captaincy and her personality and leadership style will be an asset for the team,” Woodbridge explained.

Molik is delighted with the appointment.

“Dave has left big shoes to fill and I am really inspired by the challenge. It is an exciting time in Australian tennis and we have the talent in this team to produce some great results.”

The first result she will be after is against the reigning champions Czech Republic on their home court.

“Of course we go in underdogs, but undaunted. These girls showed against Germany in Germany last year that they are capable of playing wonderful tennis and winning ties that no one expects them to win,” Molik said.

Nicole Bradtke will remain as the Fed Cup coach.

“I am fortunate to be able to come into the position while being able to work with both Nicole and Todd. I can’t wait for our first training session,” Molik said.
