The CFRS is a St John Ambulance initiative for Western Australia that empowers organisations, clubs and communities to increase the chances of survival for victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

For not-for-profit organisations wishing to join the Community First Responder Program, St John Ambulance have a heavily subsidised Heartstart First Aid automated external defibrillator (AED) offering. The normal value of the combined equipment and support program is $3,850 per defibrillator issued. St John Ambulance are pleased to be able to supply the following at the subsidised rate of $1,900 per unit.

Included in this option will be:

• 1 x Heartstart First Aid Defibrillator
• 1 x Carry Case
• 1 x Spare defibrillator pads cartridge
• 1 x Accessory Kit (shears, gloves, CPR face shield, towel)
• 1 x Standard Wall Bracket
• 8 Year Warranty
• First Responder Awareness Sessions at Belmont
• Support following a deployment of the AED
• Registration of each of the locations with our Community First Responder System

In the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, time is of the essence.  For every minute that the victim is not defibrillated they lose a 10% chance of life, so after 10 minutes, chances of recovery are virtually nil. The First Responder System is designed to help improve the chances of survival for victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

In a nutshell the First Responder System provides:

• A direct link to St John Ambulance
• Triple Zero (000) call will be received by St John Ambulance Operations Centre (State Office, Belmont)
• Key words relating to the location of your Clubs will be supplied to the Operations Centre and linked in to the computer system. When a triple zero (000) call is received, if the location details provided match these key words, Communications Officers will be alerted that there is a defibrillator, with people who know how to use it.
• An Ambulance will be dispatched and the Communications Officers will alert the First Responders at the Club, enabling them to attend the scene quickly and provide critical assistance before the ambulance arrives.

There is no cost to a Club to be a part of the First Responder System and your own response processes are not interfered with in any way.  Rather, being part of the System enhances the processes you have in place.

Free of charge First Responder Awareness Session are offered to members of the community First Responder System. The sessions are interesting and well received. They give the opportunity for questions to be answered and clarity on the defibrillation process. We usually allow 40 – 45 minutes for the session and questions.

The session covers –
• Sudden Cardiac Arrest – What is it?
• Defibrillation explained.
• The First Responder System and how it helps to save lives.
• A practical demonstration on your automated external defibrillator.

The First Responder System was operating in 445 locations in May of last year.  Today it operates in over 720 locations and increasing.
