26 June 2013 | Tennis West

The 2013 Secondary Tennis Championships known as the Pizzey Cup was held in Adelaide during the first week of May. The team was made up of 16 players, 4 players from the Government School System, 3 from the PSA, 5 from the Catholic Association, 4 from IGGSA and 2 country players from the Bunbury region.

WA competed well and played off for the bronze medal against Queensland. It was very close in the early stages with a two all tie in the first group of doubles. Unfortunately WA lost the last two doubles matches, having match points in both. The singles saw the majority of the WA boys team win but fell short in the girls singles. This resulted in a fourth placing with NSW winning gold and Victoria taking the silver. The WA team had very impressive wins over ACT (18 – 0), Tasmania (16 -2) and South Australia (11 – 7).

A most enjoyable week was had by all and the weather was nothing short of glorious with temperatures in the high 20’s. The Haigh’s Chocolate Factory excursion was well received followed up by Paddle Boating on the Torrens.

The 2014 Prizzey Cup Championships will be hosted in Perth.
