Ryan McConkey, winner Boys 14’s singles
The brave players participating in the Medibank JDS this weekend at Blue Gum Park TC endured a Saturday highlighted by torrential rain and huge winds resulting in a washout of the entire day’s play. The players and parents patience paid off as the Tennis Gods smiled on us on Sunday, providing the best possible conditions to complete the entire tournament. With the reduced scoring format (first to 4 game matches), we ripped through the entire tournament in one day. Although not ideal, the inventive format promoted some exciting (and stressful) tennis due to the fact that no-one had time to blink before the match was over.

I was impressed with the willingness of players and parents to embrace the turbotennis style of match play and must say, the eventual winners all displayed steady nerves throughout the hectic day.
I’d like to thank Medibank for their continued support of the Junior Development Series. This series introduces many new kids to competitive tennis in a controlled, inviting environment and is a pleasure to be involved with.
I’d like to thank the BGPTC volunteers for making the event enjoyable and smoothly run. Special mention to Hayden Gibson from Tennis Only for the contribution he made to the kids prizes.
