22 October 2013 | Tennis West

On Monday 16th September Tennis West in conjunction with the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Community Sport Enrichment Scheme delivered a Regional Tennis Road Show in the South West. The deliverers of the road show were Community Tennis Officers, Paul Oldfield, Brooke Koenig and Callum Ross.

To kick off the road show Paul and Brooke visited Manjimup Primary School and delivered Tennis Australia’s national program, MLC Tennis Hotshots. Next in line to receive an MLC Hot Shots clinic was Donnybrook District High School and then later Bridgetown Primary School. All throughout the road show the community tennis team were promoting the upcoming Pro Tour event in Margaret River, the Margaret River Tennis International.

The team then headed to the coast to cover as much of the South West as possible. Brooke and Callum paid a visit to Dunsborough Primary School while Paul saw some enthusiastic kids at Busselton Primary School. Both schools proved to be a great success regardless of the wild weather throughout the week. Members of the team also visited West Busselton Primary School before making the drive to Margaret River.

Paul and Callum spent the day at Margaret River Primary School providing kids with the opportunity to play some modified tennis, and for many, this was a first time experience! Paul organised ball kid training for the boys and girls volunteering at the Margaret River Tennis International for that afternoon. Despite the terrible weather, eight ball kids spent two hours on court training with Paul and assisted by Callum.

Friday 20th September was the final day of the South West Road Show. The team visited the two remaining schools in Margaret River, St Thomas Moore Catholic Primary School in the morning and Margaret River Montessori School in the afternoon before returning to Perth. Throughout the road show the Community Tennis Team promoted the new National tennis competition created by Tennis Australia called the AO Blitz.

During the road show, close to 900 kids were exposed to tennis at their school!
