Monique Barry and Louis Corker of Greenwood Tennis Club will be participating with the country’s best players at Melbourne Park for the December Showdown. Both players have been training hard throughout the year and have shown excellent results.
Barry has won four tournaments this year including the most recent girls 14U WA Open. An outstanding effort for the 11 year old. Barry has an Australian ranking of 2 for girls born in 2002 and a W.A. ranking of 1. Last year she represented W.A. in the girl’s 12U state team as a 10 year old and will once again head up the W.A. team as the number 1 player. Barry will then contest the 12U individual event at the Showdown in Melbourne for which she will be seeded number 6. A fantastic effort as she is still playing a year out of her age group.
Barry will be attending the Showdown with her coach Brad Dyer who anticipates good results for the upcoming tournament.
“Monique has been putting in some outstanding work on the practice court and will definitely hold her own in Melbourne. We are excited to be heading over and I expect her to perform well and with the experienced gained, she will only improve. I haven’t seen too many 11 year olds hit the ball as well as she does, she is going to be dangerous.”
Another promising junior from Greenwood is Louis Corker who is ranked number 1 in W.A. for his age group and will represent W.A in the 14’s Australian Teams Event held in Melbourne during the December Showdown. Corker is currently ranked number 6 in Australia for the 14’s age group and will be seeded number 4 for the 14’s Australian Championships. Corker has also managed to be a direct acceptance into the 16’s Australian Championships held a week after the 14’s competition.
Greenwood Tennis Club Coach and Tennis Australia’s Talent Development Coach Ash Dyer has been Corker’s coach for the past 5 years and believes he has a realistic chance of winning the 14’s Australian Championships.
“He has a chance to win the title, but there are some consistent players in the draw that will make a lot of balls, which is an important ingredient at this young age if you want to win junior events. Louis has a big game, a game I think that will put him in good stead come transition time from Junior to Senior. I believe Louis will start to play his best tennis around 18,19 when he fully grows into his big frame and understands the game better. That’s when his results will really matter.”
Greenwood Tennis Club also has 2 other boys that will be playing at the December Showdown. Luke Keddie will attempt to qualify for the 16’s Australian Championships and Sudock Hong will represent W.A in both the 14’s Australian Teams Event and Individual event, these players are also coached by Ash Dyer.
We wish all the juniors from W.A. the best of luck throughout the tournament.
