The Legends Breakfast is the premier fundraising event in the ‘Women in Tennis’ calendar. It celebrates tennis and raises funds for up and coming young female tennis players. This year The Legends Breakfast was held in the Granite Room at Perth Arena on Monday, 30 December 2013. 250 guests attended and among them were the Women in Tennis Committee, Tennis West Committee, the CEO of Tennis West Michael Robertson, tennis mentor and coach Rob Kilderry and Doris Brinkhaus, owner of Brinkhaus Jewellers. And of course the guest of honour and tennis legend, Australia’s Jelena Dokic.

Paul Kilderry, Jelena Dokic and Peter Vlahos

The event was led by Channel 9’s Peter Vlahos who was MC for the morning. Peter welcomed Trish Ross, President of the Women in Tennis, to give the opening speech. Trish made a special mention to three young players who were also at the event. These players were Maddison Inglis, Anja Dokic and Monique Barry who all achieved fantastic results in 2013 and are currently being sponsored by the Women in Tennis and the 100 Club.

Paul Kilderry, newly appointed tournament director of the Hyundai Hopman Cup took to the stage and spoke to guests about his time as a professional tennis player and the journey that led him to where he is today.

Jelena Dokic, former Hopman Cup winner, then made her way to the stage and was greeted with loud applause from the audience. Jelena gave an insightful talk about her career as a tennis player and what it was like growing up; the training, the hard work and her determination. Jelena explained that she was relentless with her training and joked about trying to skip class to get more practice into her day. After two years out of action with injury Jelena explained how her motivation, determination and love of tennis would help her to revive a successful career.

As the breakfast was beginning to wrap up Doris Brinkhaus was called to the stage to draw the lucky winners of her stunning jewellery. They were:

Monika Zechetmayr – First prize: a yellow gold chain and pendant set with 31 diamonds

Beryl Everett- Second prize: a chain and sterling silver tennis ball pendant set with black diamonds

Jan East – Third prize: chain and sterling silver tennis ball pendant

Following the raffle, Samantha Stosur’s racquet and dress which were worn at Wimbledon last year were auctioned. Frauke Boschammer Bolton had the highest bid for Stosur’s racquet and Graeme Sanderson was the successful bidder for the dress.

At the conclusion of the breakfast guests made their way into the Arena to watch Spain take on the USA in the Hopman Cup.

The Women in Tennis and Tennis West would like to thank Doris Brinkhaus and Paul Kilderry for their generous prize donations.
