The Sorrento Tennis Club recently hosted one of the most important junior state tournaments in the WA tennis calendar in the 2014 City of Joondalup Junior Summer Hard Court Tournament.

This Silver Series Junior Optus Tour summer tournament was run during the school holidays from Wednesday 29th January to Sunday 2nd February to provide a major hard court tournament for junior development at a time when all the other available tournaments are played on grass.

The tournament offered Australian Ranking points for 12, 14, 16 and 18 year age groups of both genders and included non ranking point events for children aged 10 years and under. The 214 junior players who entered included 69 girls and 145 boys with about 50 of these from clubs in the City of Joondalup.

Most of WA’s best junior players entered the tournament and the finals were played on Sunday 2nd February with a display of very high quality tennis.

One of the highlights of the tournament was the Boys’ 10 Singles final that was won by Cian Ingles of Sorrento Tennis Club. Cian fought a tightly contested finals match against Kent Yamazaki (Scarborough Tennis Club) to win 10-8 in the match tie-break after levelling at one set all. Cian and Kent also matched up to win the Boys’10 Doubles event. Taylah Preston of Sorrento Tennis Club took out the Girls’10 Singles Round Robin event by winning all her singles matches convincingly without dropping a set.

The Sorrento Tennis Club wishes to thank the sponsors City of Joondalup, Tennis Only and Sports Surfaces for their continuing support of tennis in WA and also the many volunteers who helped run the tournament.
