The State League Finals for the 2013/14 season took place on a rain affected weekend, culminating on Sunday in two close matches. At City Beach Tennis Club, the team began their match against Hensman Park in sunshine, with the coveted State League shield sparkled invitingly on the grass courts alongside the players. Spectators watched Katy O’Shea (CB) beat Teiwa Casey 6-1, 6-3 and Anya Dokic (HP) beat Marisa Gianotti (CB) 6-0, 7-5. Brittany Sheed (CB) won her match against Megan Kauffman 6-3,6-3 whilst Georgia Prendergast (HP) beat Meg Connell 6-0,6-1. The best rainfall Perth had seen in months then decided to suspended the match until the following morning. The girls returned at 11am to play the doubles with Katy O’Shea and Robyn Lamb beating Jade Flindell and Georgia Prendergast 7-5, 6-3. After Anya Dokic and Megan Kauffman lost a set to Marisa Gianotti and Brittany Sheed, the final was over in favour of City Beach. Congratulations girls!
The Men’s final between Greenwood and Hensman Park was also a close affair, with rain interrupting the fourth singles rubber. Tennis West President Greg Hutchinson, his empathy noted for the teams due to the terrible timing of the bad weather. The players returned on Sunday morning and Greenwood took the shield in their first State League season; what a great start to a promising team. Captain Brad Dyer and President, David Bickford are thrilled with their success.
