Over the last month, here’s how each of the Tennis West Departments have contributed to strengthening our shared vision of “Growing Great Clubs”:
Places to Play:
On Thursday, 10 April, Tennis West hosted a Club Briefing Forum at the State Tennis Centre. The turnout was extremely encouraging, with over 50 representatives from both regional and metropolitan clubs attending. Topics covered at the forum included the Tennis West strategic direction, the 2015 Hopman Cup, the future of the State Tennis Centre, and the current and future direction of Tennis League. Feedback on the forum has been very positive, with many favoring another similar forum in the coming months.
The Places-to-Play team has had a very busy month, with many clubs requiring information and assistance in areas such as court surface selection and club management. Last month, 6 clubs were provided with information regarding court surfaces, court maintenance, lighting, contractors and clubhouse development. With a further 3 clubs receiving assistance in the area of professional club management and club-coach negotiations.
Last month, Tennis West also assisted a club with attracting sponsorship procurement.
One club also took the opportunity to meet with a Tennis West staff member to receive some assistance with the design and development of their club Facebook Page.
Tournaments & Competition:
The Tournaments & Community Tennis team had the pleasure of running the Country Tennis Championships at Dalkeith Tennis Club and the State Tennis Centre from 12-16 April. In total, 11 zones, 65 teams and 127 players took part in this year’s tournament, which was a fantastic turnout, and provided some much needed tennis competition to adults and juniors from the country.
The tournaments team also represented Tennis West at a tennis function for IGGSA and the WIT Championships.
Community Tennis
The Community Tennis team organised and directed the South West Playoffs at the Busselton Tennis Club as part of the Country Schools Classic Tournament.
The team also visited John Forrest Senior High School and Belmont City College with associated Club Coaches to take part in a Cardio Tennis Demonstration.
Coach Development
This month coaches had the opportunity to attend the WA Coaches Workshop at the State Tennis Centre on the 7th April 2014. There was a great line up of speakers including Gary Stickler (former coach to Pat Rafter), Lyn Foreman (international hurdler), David Phillips (Head of Professional Development for Tennis Australia) and Len Cannell (National Academy Strength & Conditioning coach).
Coaches were thrilled with the line-up of speakers and coaches had some great “take away” messages resulting in coaches leaving the workshop with new goals and aspirations for themselves, their businesses and their clubs. It was great to see the workshop also supported by many coaching assistants and apprentices.
