The South Mandurah TC 27th Annual Junior Tennis Tournament was held between the 14th & 16th April 2014 at the South Mandurah Tennis Club in the Merlin Street Reserve.

This event is a Tennis West sanctioned tournament within their Junior Development Series (JDS) and is held annually during the Term 1 school holiday period. The JDS is designed to introduce young players to competitive tennis with the round robin format for this tournament providing entrants with numerous matches during the three days. The emphasis is on participation, good sportsmanship and enjoyment.

The tournament is open to all junior tennis players in WA and this year’s event attracted 40 entrants representing 12 Clubs ranging from Scarborough to Bunbury. Although participant numbers were down from the previous year (57), this was primarily due to rescheduling to avoid a clash with Easter/Anzac holidays in the second week of the school holidays.

The participants age range was wide and events were arranged to achieve the best fit, whilst the round-robin format provided sufficient match play for each player. The youngest players were two 9 year old boys, who played in the 11 & Under Singles and Doubles events.

Day one saw the boys and girls singles events, followed by the boys and girls doubles on the day two, and the mixed doubles on the final day. The weather was good for the three days allowing 135 matches to be played successfully.

The winners and runners-up all received their trophies at the end of each day’s play with the stand out winners being: 17 & Under Katrina Davis (South Mandurah) 15 & Under Owen Kirkham (Bunbury) 13 & Under Tarik Basic (Rockingham) 11 & Under Ethan Foo (Kwinana).

A special trophy donated by Mrs Laurie Alfrich in memory of her late husband Vince, was jointly awarded to the Girl and Boy Open Champions: Katrina Davis (South Mandurah) and Owen Kirkham (Bunbury).

The organisers of the tournament were strongly supported by a team of the Club’s senior members, and in addition to organising the court scheduling for the three days, they provided a constant stream of food and other refreshments for the players and spectators. This level of support is typical of the friendly and social atmosphere that South Mandurah Tennis Club is known for, and many of the entrants claimed that this event is one they eagerly anticipate each year. The success of this annual tournament reinforces the South Mandurah Tennis Club Vision – “to be the Club of Choice in the Peel Region”.

The Committee of the Club thank our sponsors, Alcoa, Action Trophies, SportFirst, Jack’s Bakery, and members of SMTC.
