Australia has finished in top spot at the Junior Fed Cup Asia/Oceania qualifying competition in Malaysia last month, securing its place in September’s finals.

The Australian team of Priscilla Hon, Kimberly Birrell and Maddison Inglis finished No.1 after defeating China 2-0 in the final; Birrell beat Ma Shu Yue 6-3 6-2 before Hon, celebrating her 16th birthday, sealed victory with a 7-6(4) 6-1 win over Wu Shuang Zheng.

Australia earlier recorded 2-1 wins over India and Japan in the respective quarterfinal and semifinal stages of the play-offs, after having gone undefeated in round robin play with victories over Singapore, Hong Kong and Uzbekistan.

The top-seeded Aussies were so dominant during their week in Kuching that they did not even relinquish a set in their round robin group stage.

Sixteen teams were competing for the four available spots at the Junior Fed Cup finals in San Luis Potosi in Mexico on 23-28 September 2014; joining Australia from the Asia/Oceania zone are China, Japan and Thailand.
