Camp

Within reason any player who shows talent, really enjoys tennis and wants to play and learn more, should have the chance to do so. Coaches can identify these players and invite them (through their parents) to join a club/ club training and have a more tailored program. Simple indicators of talent include:

  • Natural athleticism and ball sense.
  • Willingness and commitment to compete and play as often as possible.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Supportive parents.

Players identified would usually have at least 2 squad sessions, a private lesson and a separate group physical training session per week. The hours and level of commitment should increase as they progress – see the Athlete Development Matrix Guidelines.

This month saw three of WA’s talented athletes who have emerged from good club environments, the opportunity to attend the 10 & Under National Talent Development Camp at the Gold coast. These athletes were – Derek Pham, (coach Cameron Fenner) from Midland tennis club, Henry Hanlin (coach John Thorpe) from Dalkeith Tennis Club & Talia Gibson (coach John Roberts) from Brixton Tennis Club. Only Sixteen girls and sixteen boys from all over Australia attended the five-day camp with over 30 private coaches. The camp involved on-court sessions, physical testing, skills testing and footwork/coordination & serving workshops. Congratulations to these players, coaches and clubs.
