The most prestigious WA junior event of the year is a Gold Australian Ranking Tournament, the WA Junior Open. This is a Junior Tour event which provides a competitive pathway for aspiring young players, offering Australian Ranking points across 5 levels, Platinum, Gold, Silver Bronze and White. Gold tournaments offer the highest points outside of the National Championships.
Last week’s 2014 event played in lovely sunshine at the State Tennis Centre, received 309 entries, with some players traveling from interstate to compete. Over the 5 days from 30 September to 4 October, 485 matches were played totaling 8319 games.
Louise Corker was the Boy’s 16’s champion and Olivia Rimmer, the girl’s 16’s champion. In the 14’s, Crystal Mildwaters was victorious, which was quite a feat considering she is only 12 years old, and Tristan Schoolkate (13) won the boys event. Mikayla Zahirovic from Queensland took the 12’s girls trophy back to Brisbane, and Liam Franklin packed the boy’s trophy in his bag for the trip home to the NorthernTerritory.
