Former world No 1, David Hall is regarded as one of the greatest ever wheelchair players, winning a staggering nine Australian Opens, eight US Opens and seven British Opens, and this Saturday he will be in Perth as part of the Wheelchair Tennis Come and Try Day at the State Tennis Centre, Burswood.
Hall is regarded as one of the most accomplished wheelchair tennis players in history, and last week took his place among the greats of the game when he was inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame.
The 45 year old was thrilled to learn of his induction, as he joined the bronze statues of legends such as Rod Laver, Margaret Court and Ken Rosewall in Melbourne Park’s Garden Square.
“It is a wonderful honour, especially considering the rich history Australian tennis has had over the years” Hall said.
Born in Sydney NSW, Hall began playing wheelchair tennis at age 19, three years after losing his legs after being hit by a car.
He went on to enjoy a stellar career, completing six seasons atop the world rankings throughout the 1990s and 2000s and triumphing at least once at every major tournament in the sport, finishing his career with 19 Super Series crowns.
His success extends to the Paralympic Games; at Sydney in 2000 he won gold in the singles, then claimed silver at Athens in 2004.
Hall retired in 2006 but remains involved in the sport in his role as the Optus Australia Wheelchair Ambassador. As part of this role, Hall will be in Perth this weekend to assist with the Wheelchair Tennis Come and Try Day, to be held at the State Tennis Centre from 12pm on Saturday.
Event Coordinator, and Tennis West Community Tennis Officer, Ardian Fazliu is thrilled with the news that Hall will be in attendance.
“The Come and Try Day aims to get everyone involved in the fun of tennis. We are lucky enough to have David Hall, a champion wheelchair athlete and recent Australian Tennis Hall of Fame inductee, confirm his availability to join in on the fun. We hope that our open day can inspire the next generation of wheelchair athletes to follow the amazing example David has set, and you never know, possibly see the beginning of a future Hall of Fame inductee” Fazliu said.
The event will be from 12.00-2.00pm on Saturday and is open to anyone who has an interest in wheelchair tennis and would like to have a go on the court, including parents, carers, friends and family of wheelchair athletes. There will be a coaching session, social play, tennis drills and games, as well as plenty of other activities on offer including the popular Hit the Target inflatable and a free Sausage Sizzle.
David Hall will also be available to speak to the media prior to the event from 11.15-11.45am on Saturday. Prior phone interviews can also be arranged upon request.
