National Academy Perth athlete Maddison Inglis has played a strong role in helping Australia win the Grand Slam Nations Challenge. Australia went through the event undefeated against France, USA and Great Britain.
The Grand Slam Nations Challenge is a girl’s 18/under event that is played on-site at the WTA tournament in Eastbourne, UK. Each nation played a tie against each other in a round robin format. Each match consisted of 6 rubbers – 4 singles and 2 doubles. Each team consisted of 4 to 5 players and two coaches/captains. The coaches/captains were able to coach the players’ in-between games similar to the Davis/Fed cup format.
The members of the Australian team were:
Kimberly Birrell
Maddison Inglis
Destanee Aiava
Jaimee Fourlis
Coaches: Chris Mahony and Andrew Roberts
Inglis went through the week undefeated in singles. Inglis had her biggest junior result defeating world #9 Sofia Kennin from the USA 3/6 6/4 6/4.
The event was a great learning experience for the players as they were able to play along side some of the best players on the WTA tour as well as in front of some large crowds.
Inglis will next play in a Grade 1 junior ITF event in Roehampton (beginning Sunday). This is a lead-in event to Wimbledon Juniors that begins a week later.
