The 2015 Women in Tennis Active Girls and D’Arcy Slater Boys Live-In Camp was held during the Term 2 school holidays, from July 10th – 12th. This year the camp saw 16 boys and 15 girls participate, representing 8 regional Zones and over 10 different tennis clubs. With familiar faces, and some participating for the first time, the Live-In Camp was abuzz with energy throughout the action-packed weekend.
Excited players, and patient parents, converged on the State Tennis Centre for player registrations and the camp briefing. Following the briefing, with a quick goodbye to parents and loved ones, the players were bussed to the Loftus Recreation Centre for an afternoon filled with team-building activities that aimed to galvanise the group. As is customary during the Live-In camp, the inaugural Quiz Night challenged our players with 70 questions of brain-tickling trivia and hilarious activities that saw a giant rock-paper-scissors competition and Egyptian-like mummies fill the room. Players were then treated to pizzas and capped off the evening with a DVD.
Saturday began with a mass participation Cardio Tennis session. The session had all players wearing pedometers, to track their number of steps, and involved high-energy movements that saw the group reach 167,470 steps, roughly 66kms! Upon calculation, the amazing achievement is the equivalent of the group running a continuous relay from the State Tennis Centre all the way to Mandurah. Players enjoyed several hours on court with their coaching group, participating in fun and challenging activities, and finished the afternoon with the Tennis West Teams Challenge, a multi-sport carnival that had all players, and even coaches, running like mad. Saturday night the group enjoyed dinner at Sizzler, and were able to unwind by watching a movie of their choice at the Innaloo Cinemas.
The final day of the camp saw the players enjoy a final coaching session, with the focus on match-play and games. Coaches then placed their honor on the line in a ‘Beat the Coach’ finale, that allowed the kids to get one back over the camp coaches. With every player beating at least one coach, we had a number of kids complete the ‘Grand Slam’ by defeating all 6 coaches. The camp concluded with a BBQ for players and parents, and final presentations with guest speaker and President of the Women in Tennis Committee, Trish Ross.
Tennis West would like to thank our sponsors, the Women in Tennis Committee and the D’Arcy Slater Foundation for their continued and generous support. It is their kind contributions that help to positively influence the health and sporting habits of country children across Western Australia, and promote the social benefits the game of Tennis has to offer. Tennis West would also like to thank our six regional coaches; Alexandra Collins, Paige Newhill, Dianne Hollands, Brad Basset, Keith O’Brien and David Kerr. The coaches did a great job of mentoring the kids during the camp, and their coaching expertise and professionalism was invaluable in maintaining the fun and inclusive environment the camp prides itself on.
